And now they’re here! The Untappd Award posts are flying fast and furious and there’s no way that I could ever catch all of them. So I didn’t even try. If you’ve seen one, you know pretty much what the rest look like.
I do encourage you to check out all the winners here - and I would specifically note that in the top five-scored beverages from the USA, four are from the Midwest with Pips Meadery alone owning three of the top ten. WTG Pips. (Man, Untappd users absolutely love mead).
The highest rated beer from Illinois this year belongs to Phase Three, whose Consume S-101 Stout broke the Top 20. I’m also now very interested in checking out Dimensional Brewing Company, based right across the Mississippi in Dubuque, which edged out P3’s ranking by just a hair for their Gladius Imperial Stout.
Not a ton of other big surprises from around the Midwest, but one other thing jumped out at me from the Buckeye State. Premium Subscribers will recognize the name of ill will brewery from their exclusive weekly label emails — Ohio is a competitive state when it comes to beer recognitions, and they earned five places in that state’s top ten. Pretty impressive.
Is a lot of this mostly hype and ticking? Sure! But it’s fun to poke through data nevertheless and we congratulate all of the winners. We’ll have more on the USAToday 10Best awards next week as well.
Now, onto this weekend’s events!
Reminder: Only Premium Subscribers are being sent Wednesday label updates via email. Lite Subscribers can click here to see this week’s Kernza-Bocky label.
This Friday / Starting Friday:
Kick off the weekend by heading to Alarmist Brewing to celebrate their 10th anniversary on Friday and Saturday (the 7th and 8th).
In Cincinnati, Rhinegeist’s Bockfest Hall hosts 27 bocks from 25 breweries plus plenty of sausages and German tunes from March 7-9.
Saturday:
Haymarket’s annual Sausagefest takes place tomorrow - March 8th: 13 breweries, 13 sausages, one king of the wiener.
You can also celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th at the Green Lady with Pipeworks and help raise money for the Chicago Women in Trades group.
There’s an Anniversary Celebration on the 8th as well! Happy 7th to Will County Brewing Company; they’re partying with a couple of food trucks and a new Imperial Breakfast Stout.
Sunday:
Need some Girl Scout cookies? Pick up a few boxes and pair them with Shamrock Stout at The Open Bottle -Tinley on Sunday starting at noon.
Need to prep for St. Pat’s Day festivities? Toon’s Bar in Lakeview hosts Saint Practice Day (I love it) on Sunday with live Irish music, food specials and reps from Guinness and Tullamore Dew if you want to grab some free stuff.
Beermiscuous Highwood hosts a bonsai workshop and demo on Sunday but check their calendar for their We+Su Beer Stand featuring Japanese-style pour service throughout the month.
The Shepherd Express hosts Tap Into Milwaukee at Pilot Project MKE on Sunday with a bunch of beverages from about two dozen providers.
Next Week & Beyond:
Goose Island’s fine dining event with Vienna Beef is sold out but they’re still celebrating 312 Day with $3.12 beers and free hot dogs at the Fulton Street taproom.
After you grab a free dog, head over to On Tour as they host a month full of Grateful Wednesdays with live music and tacos.
In Detroit, Atwater Brewery’s 313 Day takes place on the 13th (naturally) where you can get a beer for $3.13.
March 14: Revolution hosts a Texas Hold'em event at their taproom that they’re calling the Ante-Hero Poker Tournament. Very clever.
March 15: Grab a green beer or a Shamrock Margarita at Cruz Blanca when they open for their St. Pat’s party at 9am.
March 16th: Take a Shield Fighting class at Eris Brewery & Ciderhouse.
March 22nd: LAGERLAND comes to City Built in Grand Rapids.
March 23rd: Head to Sturdy Shelter in Batavia for their first Book Fair & Brews event where you can meet and talk books with local authors. Cool!
March 23rd: Illuminated Beer Works hosts a screening of Magick Show, “a multi-part series diving deep into the history - and the Future! - of the Occult” with a discussion immediately following.
These Friday emails remain free and unrestricted thanks to the generous support of our Premium Subscribers, because we want to give you a reason (or three) to visit a local brewery or beer event each week.
So many thanks go out to our Premium Subscribers for all your ongoing support. We really couldn’t still be doing this without y’all.
There are a number of beers emerging that were brewed for tomorrow’s International Women’s Day celebrations, including:
Mikerphone’s Choices Become Her
Pipeworks’ The World Is Ours
Homewood Brewing Company’s One for the Honeys
Let me know if you see more! Drop em’ in the comments.
I haven’t seen these labels pop through the TTB but I like the look of these cans that Guinness Chicago is selling onsite.
For all our Premium Subscribers who saw Wednesday’s label update from Indiana, note that Three Floyds is also rolling out this brand new Imperial Geezer, which means the label you saw is probably not too far behind…
There are very few places to get your hands on Spiteful’s latest little run of Spite Lite IPA. Go get some.
You don’t see a lot of Franconian Rotbiers, but Kinslahger’s got one on draft right now to help celebrate their 9th anniversary.
I’ve never been a fan of the band Disturbed, but if Hop Butcher is going to work with them on a collab beer to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut record, of course “Down With the Simcoe” has to be the name. Well played.
Thank you all for being here! Have a great weekend. See y’all on Monday.
~Karl, a Guy Drinking one of the Real American Beers my brother sent to me just to get rid of it. It is … not good.
