Morning, friends! I’m getting this into the world early this week because by the time you read this I’ll be driving up to Mackinac Island for the weekend.
Peak autumn color and spooky stuff awaits, along with whatever draft beer is still pouring at the end of the season. There’s probably a brown ale or three in my future, I’m guessing.
Also, a quick programming note: I won’t be livetweeting (live-X-ing?) the GABF awards on Sunday morning but I will try to have our annual Midwestern medal roundup pulled together by end of Monday if we can.
Congrats in advance to all the winners! Let’s see if anyone can give Ohio a run for their money this year.
Now let’s award ourselves a weekend with one very big, fun…
This Weekend:
Of course, we’re going to encourage you to go to Dovetail and Begyle’s Oktoberfestiversary this weekend, but if you’re really eager to get the party started, you can also hit up Dovetail’s Pre-Oktoberfest shindig tonight as well. (Related: The Beer Temple’s episode this week is “A Beer That Changed My Life” with Begyle’s Kevin Cary, and it’s a great listen.)
But also, there’s an Apple Fest at Virtue Cider? In rural southwest Michigan? With a pig roast and live music and a big ol’ bonfire? Sounds great. Join them tomorrow and Sunday for the festivities.
Later This Month (and Beyond):
This year’s Beer Culture Summit kicks off on Wednesday night with A Celebration of Life and Death at Revolution Brewing and continues through the 19th. There are some very cool events taking place, so if you like learning about how beer culture intersects with death, Japanese drinking tradition or 80s electronic music culture in Chicago, you should check these out.
Lucky Dorr wants to hang out with your costumed dogs on the 17th, as that’s when they’re hosting their annual Halloween edition of Pups on the Patio.
Great Lakes Brewing Company’s annual First Taste event for their Christmas Ale is set for October 17.
Blue Island Beer Company hosts H.O.O.F. - Hands Off Our Fest - on the 19th, which is “a music fest celebrating the women, femmes, and thems of the Chicago punk scene and beyond!”
On the 19th, the Michigan Brewers Guild’s 15th annual Detroit Fall Beer Festival brings 40 breweries to Eastern Market from 1-6 p.m.
The 19th also sees Milk Money, BuckleDown and Imperial Oak partnering on a “Boos & Brews” bus trip to all three locations with a costume contest and giveaways, plus live music and food at each stop.
Imperial Oak’s Days of Darkness run from the 23rd through Halloween Night, and sees the return of their “I MUST BREAK YOU” barrel-aged stout. I assume the title is in all caps. It should be, anyways.
Got a wicked chili recipe? Maplewood wants to know about it on November 10th, when they host a chili cookoff at the Lounge.
Goose Island’s Rare Day is set for November 16th - about two weeks before Thanksgiving.

Of course, 20 minutes after I send Wednesday’s email leading with Goose Island Rare BCBS news is when I think to check the brewery’s social channels - and lo and behold, there’s more info about the new Rare and Rare Day. Go figure.
Good news for NWI early-workweek drinkers: New Oberpfalz will be open on Mondays starting October 28th.
Brass Ring is celebrating the Michigan apple with what they’re calling an “apple board” plus dishes like pork loin roasted with apples. Sounds like it goes well with beer.
Une Annee reported record attendance of their Oktoberfest celebration this year, selling out of brats, other sausages and half-chickens. Their prime rib special looks bonkers too.
I love it when breweries run numbers, and Fair State did just that for their tenth anniversary, rounding up a bunch of fun data.
Remember that Pumpkin Spice Clown Car label we showed you a couple weeks back? It’s on tap at 93 Octane Brewing as of today.
Hop District Community Brewing is launching a “Beer With (More Than) Friends” series of speed dating events for “singles in their 30s & 40s, men & women, who love great craft beer and want to meet new people in a casual, safe setting.”
Chicago style hot dog soup has returned to All Rise Brewing.
I don’t know what an elote and hot cheeto burger is but it’s good to know that I can head to Wolfden Brewing to find out.
The Beer Temple appears to be having a hell of a trip to Germany with a visit to Oktoberfest and a trip through the caves beneath Schlenkerla Brewery.
Want to find out if you can eat six margherita pizzas in thirty minutes? Flapjack Brewing is here to help.
Bubblehouse Brewing is serving as a drop-off point for supplies to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene. You can swing by and donate through the 20th.
Homewood Brewing Company is getting really, really close to opening their doors.
Solemn Oath and Great Lakes Brewing Company partnered up to make this collaborative pale ale, which comes out today.
IBW’s nuclear green Ecto-Slushy comes out today as well.
